Fall
Since our building is air conditioned and outside temperatures can vary even on warm fall days, I recommend having your child keep a sweatshirt or light jacket in their backpack at all times.
We will go outside for recess as long as it's not raining. Tennis shoes are best on the playground equipment. Sandals with straps or backs are also acceptable. Flip flops are not encouraged for running and climbing. I know some first graders are quite the fashionistas...but safety first! :)

Winter
Once it starts to feel wintery outside, please check that your child makes it out the door with a warm, winter coat each day. Teaching them to keep a pair of magic gloves in the coat pockets is a great idea. Winter hats may be stored in their bookbags or left at school in their individual cubbies. Label, label, label! Label as many of your winter accessories as possible with your child's name. Winter gear is so hard for the children to identify in the lost and found if their name is not on them.
Feel free to send your child to school with winter boots and snow pants (in a bag) on days there is snow on the ground. Students are limited on where they can go on the playground unless they have the proper gear for playing in the snow. I will do my best to remind students to return home with all of their gear each evening.
We will go outside for recess when the *Real Feel Temperature is 20° or above.
When it feels like 15-19° we will go out for a short 10-minute recess.
When it feels like 14° or less we will stay inside for recess.
*Please note these decisions are based on what the temperature "feels like" not the actual temperature.

Spring
Spring weather in Indiana is unpredictable. Please always error on the side of making sure your child will stay warm. Layering is great because then students have options for adding or removing layers. (t-shirt, sweatshirt, fleece jacket, etc.) I usually announce the Real Feel Temperature, and we interpret that information together, discussing what would be appropriate to wear or not wear outside. I tell my students they must wear their coats/jackets if the Real Feel Temperature is below 55°. I tell them it is their choice if it feels like 55° or above, but students are not allowed to come back in for jackets once they are outside.
