ALL ABOUT Our Classroom - 1A
Arrival. School begins at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday’s start time is 8:30. Students may enter the classroom 15 minutes early.
Behavior. Appropriate behavior and kind manners are expected. We will use Class Dojo to track positive behaviors. I will teach students what behaviors are appropriate for different locations around the school.
Communication. My school phone: 692-1152. This will direct you to the school secretary during school hours. Just ask for my voicemail. Email anytime at: [email protected]. I use Remind.com to send important information. Sign up by texting the message @linderk to 81010. A quick note in your child's folder is the best way to let me know of dismissal changes that you know of in advance.
Dismissal. We begin dismissing at 2:50. If you need to change plans, send a note with your child. In a pinch you can let the office know by 2:00 p.m. and the secretary will relay the message to me before dismissal. You can call the Elementary office at 692-6629. The office needs to be informed of changes in transportation. Also, please notify the office if you are picking your child up early from school.
E-learning. Assignments will be posted on Schoology by 10 a.m. on Virtual Learning days. See the label in the red communication folder for your child’s login information.
Folder. Your child will have a red parent/teacher communication folder. Please check the folder daily and remove what can stay at home. You will find a reading calendar inside during the months of October - April. This is a place to log reading minutes for Book-It!
Guided Reading. I will meet with your child at his/her reading level several times a week. These books will occasionally come home for your child to read to you. Please return the book the next day or as soon as possible. These are special books that are not easily replaced. Students who have difficulty quickly returning the books in good condition will lose the privilege of taking books home.
Homework. Your child's only consistent homework assignment is to read for 10 minutes each night. They can read from books at home, library books, or books from our reading group at school when it's sent home. Listening to your child read and reading aloud to them are both equally important! Math pages will be completed at school for the most part. Occasionally I will send home math practice pages that can be completed at home for extra practice. These do not need to be returned.
Independence. Each year your child is able to do more independently. Look for times to step back and allow them to do the work and learn new skills. Be patient and celebrate as they get better and better!
JETS Fuel Tickets. Students will earn tickets for positive behavior and cash them in for fun experiences every two weeks. Teachers and staff members are always ready to catch a student doing what's appropriate for the location they are in (bus, hallways, classroom, playground, restroom, cafeteria). Remember kids, no matter where we are... Jets work hard, exercise self control, treat others and things with respect, and always put safety first!
Keep me in the loop! If your child has exciting or important news, please share as much as you are comfortable with me. I care about what is happening in your child’s life. The more I know, the better equipped I feel to respond appropriately to what I see in the classroom.
Lunch. We eat at 10:55. Lunch costs $2.25 for elementary students. Packers should have their name and grade labeled on the outside of their lunch bag. Breakfast is also available before school for $1.50. Breakfast is available 30 minutes before school and ends 5 minutes before school begins.
Mymealtime.com. This is one way to deposit lunch money. You can also send it to school in an envelope with your child's name and the amount (and their account number if you know it). Make lunch checks payable to Adams Central.
Newsletters. A gold-colored monthly newsletter will come home at the beginning of the month in the homework folder. Also available online: www.accs.k12.in.us< Menu < Elementary Newsletters < First Grade.
Only 180 days together. It will go fast! Thanks for partnering with me to make first grade a successful year for your child.
Paris, France. We will study several different countries, but France is my favorite one to visit and learn about. It is also the theme of our classroom.
Questions – Here are questions that may help you talk to your child about their day at school. What did you read about today? Who did you play with at recess? What did you eat for lunch? Did you make any mistakes? What could you do differently next time? What special class did you have? Math papers will also come home on a regular basis and can be used as a springboard for talking about math concepts.
RAH. Reading At Home - we call it RAH for short! It is essential for a successful year in 1st Grade! Students are expected to read 10 minutes, 5 nights a week, October-April. They can also count minutes when adults read to them! Fun rewards follow!
Specials. We have a different special class for each day of the week. We go to Art with Mrs. Latman, Library with Mrs. Isch, Gym with Mr. Richey, STEM with Mrs. Steffen, and Music with Mrs. King, in that order.
Teacher. That’s me! I’m Katie. I’ve taught since 2007 in grades K-2 and Title I Reading. I have a masters in Elementary Education from BSU and have taught in Ossian, Decatur, and Monroe. I LOVE teaching 1st graders and sharing my love of books with them.
Unique. Each child is unique and special. Our "Student of the Week" will have the opportunity to share photos and special items and eat lunch in the classroom! A paper will come home the Thursday before your child’s special week.
Volunteers. We love them! We need them! There are a couple of ways to volunteer: donate snack/drink items for holiday parties or come into school to help run special events like the First Grade Circus. You can email me at [email protected] if interested.
Wish List. Empty Velveeta Cheese boxes and bags of Skittles for our class candy jar are always appreciated and can be sent in at anytime!
experiences. Kids come to school with a wide range of them. Please don’t worry if you notice your child appears to be behind or ahead of others in a particular area. In my experience in the classroom, every student has a place to shine and something to overcome. Individual progress (socially, educationally, emotionally) and a year's worth of growth is the goal!
Your help. Parents can help make it a great year by checking and removing papers on the keep at home side of the red folder each day, listening to their child read each night, reading great books aloud to their child, and cleaning out their backpacks on a regular basis. Thanks for all you do, parents!
ZZZZ’s. The right amount of sleep makes everything better! First graders should strive for 9-11 hours each night.
